I DID IT!
Last Friday I went to St. George and left Jacob home with the girls. I met up with my friend I've been training with and we drove to Zion's to check-in for our 10K run we've been training for. I was so glad I was able to go on Friday so I didn't have to get up so early on Saturday to do it! Thanks Jacob!
On Saturday all 330 runners met at the Visitor Center of zion's then took shuttles 6 miles up the canyon to the starting line. Did I mention that it was 37 degrees outside at the time-yeah, a little cold! It seemed like we had to wait around forever before they got all of us up to the top. I thought I would be nervous waiting for things to begin but I wasn't. I guess because I've been telling myself for months now that I'm a winner if I just finish the run. I honestly expected to finish in like the last 5 or 10 runners. Despite my toes which were numb from the cold, I started out ok. The scenery was so beautiful as we ran. Just over an hour later I crossed the finish line-in the middle of the pack!!!! So much better than I expected to do. I actually felt pretty good about my run and didn't feel too bad that the winners beat me by 20 minutes. I think hearing that most of them have all run the St. George and even the Salt Lake and Boston Marathons made me feel better. This is the first time I've run in something longer than a 200 yard dash-a slight difference.
On Saturday I was feeling pretty good, though a little stiff after sitting in the car a lot. Sunday I was much more stiff and today I've even more stiff. Hopefully by tomorrow I can walk normal again and will even be able to sit down without grimacing! It was actually a lot of fun training for this run, but I'm still waiting to develop the addiction to running that people say you get. I'm just proud of myself for being able to set what was a pretty high goal at the time and then actually following through and achieving it!
This is my wonderful friend Rachel who I am very thankful for. She came over on my birthday in January to give me flowers and as we were talking she mentioned she was going to get in shape for this 10k. Since I had just turned 31, of course I was feeling old and out of shape so in this moment of weakness I agreed to run with her. I am so glad I did it. Thanks Rachel!
